“I began writing books for children more than 25 years ago when my own children were small. Because I was trained as an artist, my plan was to write stories that I could illustrate myself, but as it turned out I have instead become primarily a writer. Many of my books are about natural science subjects and lend themselves to being illustrated with color photos.”

“I grew up in Minneapolis, Minnesota, with my parents, who were social workers, and my three younger brothers. Most of my summers were spent at Camp Bovey, a small camp in northern Wisconsin, and it was there that I began to develop my love for nature and the out of doors.”

Arnold lives in Los Angeles, California with her husband and pet cats, Rocky and Stella. She has two grown children who are married and has three grandchildren.

Most of the books Arnold has done have been a collaboration with professional photographer, Richard Hewitt. Several of her books have her husband’s photography and in some she has done her own photography. She has recently done her own illustrations using a cut paper art technique.

In addition to writing, Caroline Arnold also teaches part-time in the Writer’s Program at UCLA Extension. She mostly writes non-fiction books for children, but occasionally writes fiction. She has never written a book for adults but she has written articles for adults about writing for children. Arnold has also tried her hand at writing for television and writing the text for interactive CD Roms.

Caroline Arnold has written more than 100 books for young readers including:
