I hope I can visit your school or conference soon.” Bob Barner has been drawing since he was three years old. He was born in Arkansas, grew up in the Midwest, and lived in Boston for years. He graduated from the Columbus College of Art and Design. He was an art director at several advertising agencies and design studios in Boston. He studied with Milton Glazer at the School of Visual Arts in New York and was hired to help comic strip creator Al Capp draw Li’l Abner. Little Brown published his first book, The Elephant’s Visit. Some of Barner’s books have been translated into Korean, Spanish, and French, and have also been set to music and made into short films. He has also developed many educational projects. Some of his clients include The National Park Service, The New England Aquarium and Boston Museum of Science. When Barner visits a classroom he tailors his presentation to the grade level of the students with his energetic presentations. He opens up a world of music and books to the kids through reading his books and having the kids draw along to the songs of his books like Dem Bones and To Everything. He discusses how he gets ideas for his books and encourages the students to keep a journal with their own ideas for a masterpiece. He shares which teachers encouraged him to write and draw when he was a student. He also explains the process of making a book from the idea through seeing it go to print.
