Sneed
B. Collard III grew up near the ocean in Santa Barbara, California.
All four of his parents are biologists. He began writing after graduating
with Honors in marine biology from U.C. Berkeley. To support himself
while he honed his craft, he earned a master's in scientific instrumentation
at U.C. Santa Barbara and worked for several years as a computer
consultant for biologists at U.C.S.B. His first book, Sea Snakes,
was published by Boyds Mills Press in 1993. His 23rd book is due
out from Holiday House in 2001.
Sneed often travels to research his books. In 1994,
he spent two months in Costa Rica interviewing scientists for his
book Monteverde: Science and Scientists in a Costa Rican Cloud
Forest. He recently returned from five weeks in Australia where
he was researching a book about science on the Great Barrier Reef.
Sneed moved to Missoula, Montana in 1996. When he
is not writing, he enjoys hiking, swimming, whitewater rafting,
and playing frisbee with his wonderdog Mattie. Each year, he travels
to schools all over the country to talk to students about writing,
travel, and science.
Author Comments
Favorite Self-Authored Book - I have two. My first book, Sea
Snakes, is still a personal favorite because it was my first
book and I still like its blend of humor and a high-interest, little-known
subject. My other favorite is Monteverde: Science and Scientists
in a Costa Rican Cloud Forest. For that book, I traveled to
Costa Rica twice in 1994 to interview scientists working in the
cloud forest. I like the book because it is unique. No one has ever
written a book for young people about the cloud forest. The book
also tells stories through scientists' eyes, showing them not as
stodgy nerds, but just really curious people. It is my first "scientific
biography", but it won't be my last!
My Own Favorite Reading - My favorite adult author is Mark Twain,
for his humor, insight, and irreverence. I also enjoy Edward Abbey,
James Lee Burke, and Tony Hillerman. My favorite children's writers
are Lois Lowry, Richard Peck, Laurence Pringle, Russell Freedman,
Susan Campbell Bartoletti, Jeanette Ingold, and Jon Sciezka--even
if I can't spell his name!
Additional Information - Besides my wonderdog Mattie, I have two
corn snakes, Mars and Justine. I love to travel and have been to
all 50 states and 30-odd countries in the Middle East, Europe, Asia,
the Caribbean, Central America, Australia, and the South Pacific.
I also love going to movies and listening to Rock and Roll music,
especially Neil Young, the Rolling Stones, Led Zepplin, and almost
any blues artist.
