Kerley grew up in Virginia. She went to college in Chicago and studied English. After college she joined the Peace Corps and went to Nepal to teach English, Math and Science. She also hiked part way up Mount Everest with some friends. When she moved back to the United States, she got a job as a Cinnamon Roll queen at a huge bakery. Later, she and her husband moved to Guam. During their time on the island, Barbara taught English and she and her husband learned to scuba dive. They also had a baby girl named Anna. When Anna was eight months old, they left Guam and moved to California.
Today Barbara and her husband live in McKinnleyville, CA. with their daughter, their dog, and a very large cat. When she’s not writing, Barbara is usually reading, cooking, walking the dog, or riding a bike. She’s also teaching herself to play the banjo.
