“I had never considered writing children’s books until I read a book by Arnold Lobel called Ming Lo Moves a Mountain to my children. There was something about the main character and the way the author went about solving the story problem that got me hooked. I wanted to learn how to write stories that would touch others the way this book touched me.”

“People don’t realize that learning to write is like learning any new skill, without practice you’re nowhere.”

Larson grew up all over the state of Washington and knows what it’s like to be “the new kid;” she went to five different elementary schools, two junior highs and two high schools. She graduated cum laude, with a B.A. in Broadcast from Western Washington State College, and earned an M.A. in Communication Education from the University of Washington.

She is the acclaimed author of the 2007 Newberry Honor Book,

Hattie Big Sky. The novel was written for young adults andwas inspired by her great grandmother, Hattie Inez Brooks Wright, who homesteaded by herself when she was a young woman in Eastern Montana.

When Kirby Larson isn’t writing, she enjoys activities with her family, reading, quilting, camping and cross country skiing. She lives in Kenmore, Washington with her husband, Neil. They have a daughter who was recently married and lives in Seattle with her new husband, Matt and works as an interior designer. They also have a son who works in the film industry in New York.
