Author Mary Nethery grew up in California and has always loved to write. In the second grade, the author began her first novel complete with illustrations, and hasn't stopped writing. She has traveled extensively and has a passion for adventure, animals, kindness, and spunky characters--the themes most often found in her books.
Ms. Nethery's first book, Hannah and Jack, illustrated by Mary Morgan and released from Atheneum, has received enthusiastic reviews--SLJ, Booklist, and Children's Book Review Servicehave called it a "warm, fuzzy," "heart-warming" and "satisfying picturebook." Horn Book says, "Readers will enjoy both the sweet watercolor and gouache illustrations of a child and a loved pet and the fact that Hannah is able to solve her problem independently." It is also included in Best Books For Children: A Lively And Opinionated Guide, by Valerie Lewis and Walter Mayes. Other published books include Mary Veronica's Egg, and Orange Cat Goes to Market. Her work is published in Spider and Ladybug magazines, as well as in Short Stories for Reading Aloud. She can also be found in the anthology, Writers in the Kitchen.
The author shares with children her passion for writing. She presents a behind-the-scenes look at how a book is born, how a story is formed, and where story ideas come from. She has an extensive background in the classroom and enjoys working with both large and small groups of children. Her purpose in working with students is to affirm them as fellow writers and tap the passion within each child.
Mary Nethery is married and has a son. She combines writing with a career in education. She has studied writing with Jane Yolen at Centrum, and has a B.A. in Music and English Literature and a M. A. in Education. She has been a classroom teacher, curriculum developer of an award-winning social science program.
Ms. Nethery's goal is to write books that children will read with a flashlight under the bed covers long after their parents have kissed them goodnight. If they wake up the next morning with her characters still in their head, then she's in heaven.
